GUWAHATI: Union minister of state for external affairs V. Muraleedharan called on chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal at his official residence here on Sunday to discuss matters relating to implementation of the Act East Policy and making Northeast the natural corollary of benefits of the policy.
During the meeting Chief minister Sonowal pointed out that the Act East Policy needed to be made more proactive by promoting India’s economic cooperation, cultural ties and friendly and strategic relationship with South East Asian countries by harping on continuous engagement at bilateral and multilateral levels taking Assam and Northeast as the heart of the policy.
He requested the Union minister to use this policy as a tool to further economic initiatives.
Sonowal also said that continuous engagements of all South East Asian countries in the field of education, cultural exchanges and people-to-people contact would also go a long way to make the Act East Policy more successful.
The chief minister also requested the Union minister to use his good office to fine tune the institutional mechanism for improved airways, roadways, waterways, railways and information ways in the north eastern region.
