100 mn globally use Files to declutter their phones
Files by Google — the tech giant’s memory-decluttering app for smartphones remove up to 8 GB of space every second — which is equivalent to 2,200 photos. Every month 100 million people globally use the app to declutter space and manage content on their phones, the company announced.
The Internet giant has redesigned its memory-decluttering app ‘Files Go’ on November 2018. The app also assists users to find files faster and share them with others even without an Internet connection.
“Forwarded messages can cause duplicate files and memes to quickly consume phone storage. Around the world, Files helps people to delete more than 300 duplicates and 150 memes every second — the app can quickly find and suggest files for removal using Google’s mobile vision technology,” Tomas Vorel, Growth Manager, Next Billion Users, Google, wrote in a blog post on Thursday.
Files was built for people with low phone storage, many of whom live in regions like India, Nigeria and Brazil and often run out of space daily.
“However, in the past two years, we’ve seen people everywhere use Files. The app reduces the stress of managing stuff on your phone and helps you to get things done faster, whether that means finding your favourite photo, sharing files without using data, or removing old files to make your phone feel like new,” Vorel added.
Aiming to help users preserve battery and reduce eye strain, the company has also introduced a new all-black dark theme option in the app.
The new features would be available to everyone over the next few days, the company added. (IANS)
Snapchat gives advertisers fast ad-creation tool
To let advertisers create quick ads, photo-messaging app Snapchat has rolled out a new feature called “Instant Create” on its platform.
“Just select your objective (increase web visits, app installs, or app visits), enter your business website and finalise your targeting. Then you’re ready to publish!” the company wrote in a blog-post, explaining the three steps of the ad-making tool.
For small and medium businesses (SMBs) that lack budgets and resources, Snapchat’s “Instant Create” offers an easy-to-use tool for creating quick single-ad campaigns with minimal design requirements, web portal Marketing Land said on Thursday.
Once provided with a business URL, Instant Create would be able to pull in photos directly from your website to help create an ad.
For quick creatives, users would also have an option of using imported images or uploading new ones from their computers.
Currently, Instant Create only supports Snap Ads. (IANS)
NASA finds potentially habitable planet 31 light-yrs away
In what could be one of the biggest developments in the search for habitable planets, NASA has discovered a “Super-Earth” estimated to be about six times the size of our planet and located a mere 31 light-years away.
The planet, GJ 357 d, orbits a dwarf star in the Hydra constellation and may have the right conditions to support liquid water as it lies within its star’s habitable zone, reported CNN.
“This is exciting, as this is humanity’s first nearby super-Earth that could harbour life,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, the director of the Carl Sagan Institute.
While the average temperature of the planet is estimated to be around -64 degrees Fahrenheit (-53 degrees Celcius), it could still maintain liquid water on its surface like Earth owing to its thick atmosphere.
The planet was spotted by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).
TESS began its space operation in July 2018, promising to survey about 85 per cent of the sky. The satellite has so far discovered more than 20 planets outside of our solar system. It may be noted that a super-Earth is an extrasolar planet with a mass higher than Earth’s, but substantially below those of the Solar System’s ice giants, Uranus and Neptune. (ANI)
YouTube Premium starts rolling out 1080p offline downloads
Google-owned video sharing platform YouTube Premium is starting to let subscribers download videos in 1080p resolution for offline viewing, up from the 720p limit that was in place until now.
Support for the upgraded resolution is rolling out slowly through YouTube’s iOS and Android apps, and Google has confirmed that it would expand the new update to all Premium users gradually, The Verge reported on Thursday.
Right now it is not clear whether YouTube plans to make the feature available to non-Premium users.
YouTube Premium, just like all premium services, comes with a range of exclusive features and improvements that are only available to those who pay for the service.
The service offers ad-free music streaming through YouTube Music Premium and Google Play Music services. It also enables the subscribers to ‘listen in the background’ all videos and music being played on the mobile app. (IANS)
