Church mum on chowkidar’s arrest

SHILLONG: The Mawkhar Presbyterian Church is tightlipped over the arrest of its chowkidar for misuse of funds with the police stating it is only the tip of the iceberg indicating involvement of more people.
When contacted, a pastor said the Church has not authorised anyone to speak on the matter and has chosen not to comment.
A police official said, “We are only touching the tip of the iceberg. It will be a long drawn investigation.” An FIR was filed by the Church leaders which resulted in the arrest of Alfast Bareh by the Lumdiengjri police on Saturday.
When asked whether it was an inside job, the police official said that it is too early even to point at anybody but various people may be involved.
The chowkidar of the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Church, Mawkhar was arrested for allegedly misusing funds Church funds amounting to Rs 3.26 crore since 2013.
