New GOC calls on Guv
SHILLONG: Lieutenant General Tumul Varma, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 101 Area called on the Governor of Meghalaya Tathagata Roy at Raj Bhawan on Tuesday. During the meeting, the GOC discussed several relevant issues including the prevailing security situation in the state, and assured the Governor of continued and enhanced civil military interaction and cooperation. The Governor welcomed Varma to the city and conveyed his best wishes.
Awareness programme
SHILLONG: St Mary’s College organised an awareness program on ‘Protecting Mother Earth and its Ecosystem’, from July 25 to 30 for the staff and its students. The Chief Guest of the Inaugural function was Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Govt of Meghalaya, CP Marak, and the Guest of Honour was Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills Matsiewdor War Nongbri. During the programme, the students of the college organised a skit and a poster exhibition under the guidance of the resource persons, who were NGOs devoted to promoting ecological sensitivity. The programme concluded with a valedictory function.
Theatre workshop in Tura
TURA: The Assistant Curator, District Museum, Tura, has informed that ‘Production Oriented Theatre Workshop’ will be organised by North East Zone Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Dimapur, in collaboration with Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya in association with A’chik Theatre, Tura from August 14 to 30 at District Auditorium in Tura. In this regard, interested persons have been advised to contact the Assistant Curator, District Museum, Dakopgre, Tura for detailed information.
Jal Shakti Abhiyan
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Rifles observed ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan Campaign’ to improve water scarcity in the country. During this campaign, BSF Meghalaya Frontier took demonstrative measures to conserve water. Troops deployed at international border of the state also took part in the campaign. The Assam Rifles organised a series of events commencing with oath ceremony for conservation of water followed by a tree plantation drive within the station.
Nongpoh Youth Exchange meet
NONGPOH:The first-ever Youth Exchange programme in Ri Bhoi district was held on Tuesday at the District Library Auditorium, with an intention to give a platform to the young and dynamic minds of the district to exchange several aspects of culture, talents and knowledge among themselves. The platform also aimed at providing an opportunity to the young boys and girls to come together and interact among themselves and gain more encouragement and motivation in their quest for a bright future. The District School Education Officer of Ri Bhoi, VS Nongbet, while addressing the valedictory function as chief guest said this kind of platform will be beneficial to the youths of the district. “This is the kind of platform that will give the talented youths a chance to showcase their talents. Having said that, proper guidance and knowledge is very important at this stage for the young boys and girls to move forward in the right direction and become responsible citizens of the country,” Nongbet said. As the theme of the programme was ‘say no to drugs’, Nongbet urged the participants to leave behind all negative and bad habits if they want to live long, enjoy and succeed in life. During the valedictory function, prizes and certificates were also handed over to the winners.
