BSF organises outreach programmes in border areas
TURA: A Civic Action Programme-cum-free Medical Camp was organised by the 141 Bn BSF for the benefit of people residing in the remote areas of South Garo Hills close to the Indo-Bangladesh border recently.
In the series of outreach programmes conducted by the security force at remote villages of Panda and Chiringgre, a total of 376 villagers from both villages comprising of local headmen, teachers, students and the general public participated.
As part of the programmes, household items like syntax water tanks and filters, plastic chairs, plumbing tools, stationary and sports equipments were distributed to the students and the villagers.
A free medical camp was also conducted as part of the programmes where doctors of the BSF along with Baghmara Civil Hospital doctor, Dr Cline Sengsang and nursing staff carried out medical check-ups of around 200 patients and distributed medicines free of cost.

First Pnar chartered account
SHILLONG: A local youth excelled in the recently conducted Chartered Accountancy (CA) examination conducted by ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).
Premi Dkhar, a son of Novel Phawa and Tharsila Dkhar, residents of Iongkaluh, East Jaintia Hills has scripted history among the Pnars to become the first chartered accountant, successfully clearing one of the toughest and highly competitive examinations in the country with two distinctions.
He did his elementary education in St. Peter’s School Iongkaluh and matriculation from Khliehriat Higher secondary school. He completed his class 12 in commerce from Shillong College and Graduation in B Com from St Anthony’s college.

Teachers submit memo to Education Minister
TURA: A delegation from the All Garo Hills Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association (AGHGLPSCTA) recently met Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbhui at Circuit House in Tura and submitted a memorandum on their demand for disbursement of salary for full 12 months and maternity leave facility.
During their meeting with the minister, many questions concerning the difficulties being faced by them were raised by the delegation. With regard to the demand of the teachers for the release of full 12 months’ salary, the Minister is said to have disagreed but instead assured them that the government was trying to solve the problems by regularising their services, which would be done at the earliest.

Meet highlights adverse effect of tobacco
NONGPOH: The District Tobacco Control Programme Ri Bhoi District, on Friday organised a one-day District Level Coordination Committee Meeting and Orientation for Stakeholders on National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) at the Conference Hall of Civil Hospital Nongpoh. The meeting was chaired by the DM&HO Ri Bhoi District M Mawrie in the presence of DP Kharsati MCS,ADC, VDS Rymbai and others.
The meeting was attended by the headmistress, headmaster of different schools, women organisations, headman and representatives of NGOs.
Kharsati in his keynote address said it is the responsibility of all to work together to enable to eradicate these harmful products.
The State Nodal Officer, LL Nongbri who was also a Resource Person of the day, briefed the gathering on history of the National Tobacco Control Programme.
She also highlighted the adverse effects of tobacco use adding that Meghalaya ranks second in cigarette users and fifth in other related tobacco products use among North East States.
She also pointed at the initiatives of the government to make institutions in the district tobacco-free.
L Sangma, State Programme Officer Tobacco Control from the Union spoke about the Section 4 , saying that it prohibited smoking in public places like hospitals, auditorium, railway waiting room, amusement centres, restaurants, public offices, educational institutions etc whereas Section 6 discourages initiation and tobacco use among youth.
V Mawlong, District Nodal Officer of NTCP in her presentation highlighted the objective of the Section 5 and 7.
