GUWAHATI: Anti-influx forum, Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM) has pledged to outline a concrete plan of action to rectify the alleged discrepancies in the National Register of Citizens which was released on Saturday.

The forum, while terming the final NRC as “a failure of the 40-year-old Assam Movement and an insult to the sacrifice made by 855 martyrs”, said, “At this critical juncture, all indigenous both individually and collectively should set aside their self interest and put forward only the interest of the community.

Addressing the media here on Monday, PVM convener, Upamanyu Hazarika suggested that the alleged discrepancies in the NRC along with supporting documentation should be gathered and the task of compiling the data should be undertaken.

“This will help understand the manner and mode in which the update process has been subverted and corrective measures thereafter can be taken. “In this connection, we will discuss with Assam Public Works (the original petitioner in the Supreme Court which led to NRC update in 2013) and other interested organisations and outline a concrete plan of action shortly,” Hazarika, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court, said.

He further said that the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is seized off the issue of validity of cutoff date, grant of citizenship to children of foreigners, on both of which issues the government has taken a stand antagonistic to indigenous interests.

“The petitioner, Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha in this case does require and need financial support. It is our duty to help and support the Mahasangha to effectively fight the case and we appeal to all to come forward to help the Mahasangha fight this case after discussions with the relevant persons,” Hazarika said.
