Free eye screening camp
SHILLONG: The Rotaract Club of Pine City organised a free eye screening camp in collaboration with Bansara Eye Care Centre at Laitkroh Presbyterian School on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Skhemjingmut Law, Advisor, Rotaract Club of Pine City briefed about Rotaract and its objective. Grace Sna, Faculty Optometrist, Bansara Eye Care Centre sensitised the students on different types of eye diseases and the ways to take care of their eyes. During the eye screening session, the Bansara team conducted the screening of 305 people. Free glasses will also be provided to them. Further, the Rotaractors took the opportunity to encourage the students of class VII to X through a career guidance session. They reminded the students that their socioeconomic status should not hinder their willingness to achieve their dreams of becoming who they want to be. The programme was supported by Rotary Club of Shillong and Laitkroh Presbyterian Church.
Annual youth meet
SHILLONG: The Catholic Youth of Nongstoin Diocese (CYND) held its 21st annual fresher’s-cum-social meet at Anton Hall in the city on Sunday. The programme began at 10am with the celebration of Mass by Fr. Anthony Kharkongor SDB, principal of St. Anthony’s Hr. Sec. School, Laitumkhrah. Rambrai MDC Bajoplang Pyngrope and Nongstoin MDC Gabriel Wahlang graced the morning session as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively. “Youth life is not a bed of roses, rejections, persecutions and despair will be there but be patient and you will see the differences in life,” said Pyngrope. “The only way to solve our problems is to forgive our enemies and forgive one another,” he added. Gabriel Wahlang, who is also the Advisor of CYND said, “Social meet is the only way to meet each other in this world of social media. People are becoming individualistic and busy with their mobile phones.” The afternoon session began at 1.30pm and was graced with the presence of Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein who encouraged the youth to do well in their studies. The programme also included performances such as dance, singing and self-introductions by the freshers and concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners of the football and basketball tournaments as well as the winners of Mr and Ms Fresher, 2019.
Christian book fair
WILLIAMNAGAR: The Christian Book Fair, organised by the Leading Christian Book Publishers and Distributors, is under way at the Veterinary Vocational Training Centre Hall, Williamnagar, where Christian books and other materials, besides Bibles are available. The nine-day long fair was inaugurated by Rev. JK Sangma of Kusimkolgre Baptist Church and Pastor PD Sangma of Town Baptist Church, Williamnagar, in the presence of pastors and church leaders of different Christian denominations on August 30. This fair will also be organised at Baghmara in South Garo Hills and Mendipathar in North Garo Hills for five days, informed the organisers.
Swachh Survekshan in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT: The Deputy Commissioner East Jaintia Hills, FM Dopth launched the Swachh Survekshan Grameen in East Jaintia Hills at a function held at Khliehriat West Community Halls. Top officials of the District including EACs and the District Coordinator DSBM(G), East Jaintia Hills and Sanitation Engineer State Swachh Bharat Mission were also present. The EJH DC, Dopth told the gathering that sanitation and cleanliness is the most important part of every individual personally and also in the society. Dopth said that women has a vital role to make every locality clean. The District Coordinator DSBM(G), East Jaintia Hills District U W. Buam, spoke on the role of the “Swachh Survekshan Grameen, while the Sanitation Engineer, State Swachh Bharat Mission, Khrawkupar Suja, explained about how processing method to convert spoils and garbage into organic fertilisers.
