Complaint against blast fishing in Shella

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) Shella Unit has lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills over the practice of blast fishing.
In a statement issued here, publicity secretary of KSU Shella unit, Silas Ora said there has been rampant killing of fishes using dynamite starting from Sohbyrthied, Khat-Ar and Madan Liengsuiñ to Bangladesh border.
In their meeting with the DC, Matsiewdor War, the KSU delegation led by the general secretary of Shella Unit, Ferrybert Dolloi, the former assured to take up the matter and asked the union to coordinate with the district administration to curb the illegal practice.
The union has also demanded the arrest of culprits.
To this, the DC has agreed to send personnel to inspect the areas and to ensure that such practices are not repeated.
The KSU has condemned the use of dynamite and warned the culprits of any damage to aquatic life.
The union said most of the residents earn their livelihood from fishing and asserted that using dynamite to kill fish will affect their livelihood.
The union has called upon the residents of Shella to take the responsibility of preserving the natural resources and to inform if any miscreants attempt to damage Shella river.
