SHILLONG: The Shillong Times Platinum Jubilee Committee in collaboration with the state government, educational institutions of Shillong, hoteliers, NGOs, well-meaning individuals and the dorbar shnong of different localities has taken a long-term pledge to clean up the two main rivers of Shillong— Umkhrah and Umshyrpi and their tributaries — twice every month.
The first Operation Clean-up at Umkaliar was on August 8, in the presence of Afroz Shah, the UN designated Champion of the Environment from Mumbai.
The next clean-up was on August 17.
The team is now gearing up for the third clean-up drive on Saturday a little below the area where the team had last cleaned up the river to ensure that the river and its surroundings retains its cleanliness.
The cleaning drive will be held from 9 am to 1 pm. The meeting point is the Umkaliar field.
The Committee has urged all citizens and groups to lend their weight to Operation Clean-up and to join the team on Saturday “with their gloves and gum boots on.”
