Assam Rifles ex-servicemen rally
SHILLONG: Assam Rifles ex-servicemen (ESM) rally, to honour the sacrifices and selfless service of the Nepal domiciled Indian pensioners, was conducted in Kathmandu on Tuesday. Over 500 ESM, veer naris, other ladies & dependents attended the event which was presided over by the Director General Assam Rifles, Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan, and Sangeeta Sangwan, President Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association (ARWWA). The DG Assam Rifles felicitated gallantry awardees, war veterans, veer naris, ladies and disabled ESM. During the rally pension arrears amounting to Rs 48,37,105 was paid to the Next Of Kin (NOKs.) Pension cases as old as 1996 were resolved and pension payment order (PPOs) and arrears were issued to NOKs. Besides, battery operated wheelchairs, walking sticks, etc. were also distributed.

One-day Kisan mela
WILLIAMNAGAR: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, East Garo Hills, in collaboration with Agriculture and other line departments organised a one-day Kisan Mela under Jal Shakti Abhiyan at the office premises of the Block Development Officer, Songsak on Monday. Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign is a time-bound, mission mode water conservation campaign. Addressing the gathering, Project Director, East Garo Hills DRDA, L Ch Marak, highlighted the aims and objectives of Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign and lauded the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, and other line departments for organising the mela at Songsak. A large number of farmers from Samanda, Songsak and Rongjeng C&RD Blocks participated. As part of the mela, quiz and painting competition for schoolchildren was also held.

Digital knowledge sharing platform
SHILLONG: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) launched DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge SHAring) with the motto ‘Our Teachers, Our Heroes’ to coordinate this effort at a national level, the Joint Director of Educational Research & Training, Meghalaya informed in a statement issued here. Being at the forefront of digital initiatives in the education sector, Meghalaya has initiated to develop Energized Textbooks with QR codes for Classes IX and X to make the content available through the DIKSHA learning platform. The interactive audio-visual content, assessments and animations will make learning interesting for children, thereby helping them understand concepts better, the statement said. It is also expected to reduce the pressure on teachers by providing them with a range of curated content linked to the curriculum that they can use while preparing for classes, it added. It further informed that the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), the nodal agency under the department of education for implementing DIKSHA, will conduct training sessions to ensure that teachers are aware of making the best use of the energized textbooks. The DERT also plans to create and curate quality content by trained state government teachers that can be leveraged by the other states through the DIKSHA.

Inter-school Science exhibition
Shillong: Union Christian College, Umiam Khwan through the Science Society conducted a one-day Inter School Science exhibition competition for schools within Ri Bhoi on Tuesday. Students from seven different schools participated in the exhibition with great scientific temperament and exhibited their knowledge about science and its innovations. An open interaction and experimental demonstration was also displayed by all science departments of the college. St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize with the exhibit titled “Disaster Management”, the second prize was won by Khrum Diengiei Hr. Secondary School on the topic “Ecosan Toilet” and the third prize went to James Memorial Hr. Secondary School with the exhibit titled “A Demonstration of an external Defibrillator”.

New varieties of guava
SHILLONG: The Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Department has informed that the new varieties of Guava, which are suitable for the rain-fed condition of the state, duly developed by ICAR, Umiam, North Eastern Region were recommended for release by the State Seed Sub-Committee. The new varieties of Guava are Megha Supreme, RCGH-1, a high yielding variety suitable for table and processing purpose, moderately tolerant to stem borer and fruit fly, Megha Magenta, RCGH-4, a coloured high yielding variety suitable for processing and table purpose, moderately tolerant to fruit fly, stem borer and Anthracnose fruit rot, tolerant to moisture stress and frost, Megha Wonder, RCGH-7, a drooping and high yielding variety suitable for table and processing purpose and tolerant to moisture stress and frost, moderately resistant to Anthracnose fruit rot, fruit fly and stem borer and Megha Seedless, RCGH-11, a low seeded high yielding variety suitable for fresh consumption and processing purpose and moderately resistant to Anthracnose fruit rot, fruit fly and stem borer.

Radio Bridge programme
SHILLONG: The All India Radio Shillong in its Radio Bridge programme will broadcast live interactive discussion on “Corruption: A major setback for development” on Friday from 8 pm to 8.40 pm. The programme will be available on FM 100.1 Mghtz; AIR-NE DTH; AIR Live-streaming mobile app on “North Eastern Service” and on Alexa. The panellists for the programme are from different AIR-stations who include Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Sr. Journalist Guwahati, Yumnam Rupachandra, Editor-in-chief, Impact TV, Imphal, Kezhokhoto Savi, Advocate Guwahati High Court Kohima Bench, Asst Prof Kohima Law College and President Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ organization, Kohima and Biswambhara Mishra, Head of Dept Economics, NEHU Shillong.

College completes 58 years
SHILLONG: Sankardev College celebrated its 58th Foundation Day-cum-Grand Finale of the College Week in the College premises on Monday. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, graced the occasion as the chief guest besides L S Gassah, president and members of the Governing Body of the college, retired teachers and invitees. Students of the college performed various traditional dances of the North East and meritorious awards were given to position holders in the university exam. Moreover, Dr RN Upadhyay Award was given to Iaidaphun Lyngdoh Mawphlang (9th position in NEHU merit list, Sociology honours) for the highest marks secured in the college besides Dr AR Tripathi Award, which was awarded to Ristilin Rani (2nd position in NEHU merit list, Khasi honours) for the highest marks secured in languages. The college had also recognised some of its senior staff who had journeyed with the institution for 25 years. They include A K PATEL, Dept. of Mathematics, N BHUYAN, Dept. of English and M GUPTA, Dept. of Mathematics.
