Disregard for road safety ends in tragedy

SHILLONG: An under-age rider lost his life while another pillion rider sustained injuries when the scooty they were travelling on dashed against a maxi cab near Nongmynsong on Saturday morning
According to police, the accident took place around 7:40am near the post offfice at Umkdait near Nongmynsong when one Yahama Scooty (ML 05 R 8831) ridden by Raksim N Marak (17) dashed against the maxi cab.
The pillion rider has been identified as Rupesh Pradhan.
Police said that the rider was not wearing a helmet and that the crash happened while they were proceeding from Nongmynsong Bazaar towards Ishyrwat due to rash and negligent riding.
The Maxi cab (ML 01 6940) which had stopped to pick up passengers was driven by Rakhes K Syntiew (24).
Police also clarified that the scooty did not belong to the deceased but to someone else.
Marak succumbed to his injuries on the way to NEIGRIHMS Hospital whereas the pillion rider was admitted for treatment.
A post mortem examination was exempted following a request made by the family of the deceased.
