SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Friday asked the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Meena Kharkongor to act as a mediator between a husband and wife to sort out the difference in a matter relating to the custody of a minor.
The husband along with the infant child was present in compliance to the earlier order of the court. The mother had sought custody of the child through an earlier petition.  The husband appeared in person and produced the photo copy of the letter of July 24 this year signed by the petitioner, wherein, the custody of the child has been agreed to be handed over to him.
However, the authenticity of the letter was denied by the petitioner on the ground that the signatures of the petitioner thereon were obtained under threat.
“Be that as it may, since the matter relates primarily to the custody of a minor child, it would be appropriate that it is referred for mediation between the parties”, the court said.
Accordingly, Kharkongor was requested to act as a mediator and to send the report to the court by Saturday.
The parties were directed to appear before the mediator on Friday.
The matter has been adjourned to October 21 for further consideration.
The husband along with the child should be present on the next date of hearing, the court said.
