TURA: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday unveiled the new school building at Wadanang Secondary School in Tura which was constructed under ‘Supporting Human Capital Development Project in Meghalaya’ and funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
It may be mentioned that the project focuses on the improvement of secondary education, infrastructure and skill development.
Under this project, scores of government aided secondary and higher secondary schools in the state are being upgraded with the kind of infrastructure to improve the overall learning environment for the students.
So far, the project has been implemented in 14 schools in the region.
Conrad said that the project is a blessing for the students and the people of Wadanang as well as Garo Hills and the state as a whole.
Conrad also said that it was an appropriate time to thank all those people who were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.
He lauded the work done by the ministers of the former government including the former legislator, present government and officials of the state in ensuring timely completion of the ADB project.
“Our government is keen to take this project further which is why we have already started the second phase of the ADB project that is aimed at helping to improve the necessary requirements of various schools of the region,” Conrad said.
Special classes for bottom 20 schools
Meanwhile, the chief minister also expressed his concern with the average pass percentage in Garo Hills regarding the Class X SSLC Examinations and informed that deliberations and discussions have been held.
“We have decided to identify the bottom 20 schools from the region and provide special classes specifically aimed for those students appearing for the SSLC Examinations,” Conrad said.
Highlighting the problems of winter breaks which tend to have a negative effect on many students appearing for these crucial exams, Conrad said that one of the main reasons contributing to the poor performance could be due to the fact that students usually appear for their examinations after a long holiday break without attending preparatory classes.
“We are of the view that special classes need to be given to students during winter breaks so that they are well prepared for the exams,” he said adding that many more improvements are being planned to benefit the students.
The Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister and North Tura MLA, Thomas A Sangma, while appreciating the ADB project for Wadanang Secondary School, expressed his optimism by stating that modern facilities such as the smart classrooms, library, computers and science laboratories would immensely help the students excel in the future.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, Additional Director of School Education and Literacy, Tura P Ryngsai, Chairman of the Tura Municipal Board and SMC member JD Sangma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, WGH, ZJ Sangma and others were present during the programme.
