Assault victim’s family refutes Assam police claim
TURA: The family of the Garo girl who was assaulted in Guwahati, Assam on November 10 has refuted the claim by Assam police that it was unaware of any such incident or complaint lodged at Dispur Police Station. According to the victim’s family, an FIR was filed in the same police station on the night of the incident, a copy of which has also been submitted to this office. According to them, an SI identified as Arun Baruah was in charge of investigating the assault case and they suspect that he might have been responsible for keeping the incident under wraps.

Man robbed at gunpoint
JOWAI: A man from West Jaintia Hills was looted near Saba village bordering Karbi-Anglong Assam allegedly by a group of armed and masked men on Wednesday while he was on his way to Umkhyrmi for buying cattle. The man identified as Constantine Langstang of Madankynsaw (Moowkyndeng) village stated in a police complaint lodged at Nartiang Police Station that the armed men speaking Karbi language looted him of Rs. 1.30 lakh along with his mobile phone bearing number 8837478993 and also his jacket.  He also stated that he was going to Umkhyrmi village to buy cattle but on reaching an isolated place near Saba village, the armed group who claimed to be a militant outfit looted him at gun point.

Civic action programmes
SHILLONG: Two civic action programmes were organised by 67 Bn CRPF in Mawdiangdiang and in Mawlai on Wednesday. Sunit Varshney, commandant CCD, along with TP Singh, deputy commandant and S Seema Devi, assistant commandant, 67 Bn CRPF, distributed RO filters, water storage tanks and solar lights to the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) in Mawdiangdiang in the presence of M Shira Kshir, BDO Mawpat, Anganwadi workers, village headmen and villagers. Meanwhile in Mawlai, solar lights were distributed to two villages in the presence of the BDO of Mawlai, Peter Passah.

Garo body holds first meeting
SHILLONG: The first ever annual general conference of the All Garo Hills Daawa Mahari Association (AGHDMA) was held at Siju in Asakbanda on October 26. More than 500 participants attended the meeting. The attendees included delegates of Dawa Mahari Associations from different parts of Garo Hills. The senior Chra (elder) of the Dawa clan Mandro Dawa Sangma graced the occasion as the chief guest along with Sengban G. Momin, Dawa gachi as the guest of honour. The meeting began with the unfurling of the Dawa Mahari Flag. Resolutions were taken during the event to promote unity of the Dawa mahari and to preserve its identity. The event included the unveiling of the association’s constitution. The AGHDMA was formed in 2018 in Edenbari, Tura. A resolution was also taken to make the conference an annual event.

Entrepreneurship session tomorrow
Shillong: The NEHU Incubation Centre will organise a one-day entrepreneurship session in collaboration with Karmyo Foundation, Pune and Shillong Chapter, Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata on November 16. The session will aim to instill entrepreneurial mindset among students. The practical session will involve participants generating startup ideas, creating business plans and pitching them to an audience. The centre will be training students from various departments and ignite young minds.  The participants will be exposed to various steps to be undertaken while setting up an enterprise, such an experience will create awareness among the youth on how to take an idea to a successful venture. The session will be based on the concepts of ‘Lean Startup’.

Blood donation camp 
TURA: A voluntary blood donation camp cum awareness programme was held at Police Hospital in Tura on Thursday. The programme was conducted by Civil Hospital, Blood Bank, Tura, Tura Civil Hospital in collaboration with National Health Mission, Meghalaya, Meghalaya Aids Control Society and State Blood Transfusion Council and organised by Meghalaya Police, Tura. DIG, Western Range, Tura Anurag Kumar, Superintendent of Police, South West Garo Hills, Ampati Rituraj Ravi, Superintendent of Police, North Garo Hills, Dr Sacheng R Marak, ASP, Tura Deepak Kumar Palecha, SDPO, Dadenggre Sub-Division, Shailendra Bamaniya, DSP HQ, Tura John Clitzer A Sangma and other staff of the police department voluntarily donated during the camp.

Applications invited for PDS
Shillong: The Sub-Divisional Officer of Supply, Sohra Civil Sub-Division, has invited fresh applications from interested individuals, cooperative societies, NGOs and SHG concerning appointment as government’s nominee or wholesale dealership in PDS for the year 2020 at approved wholesale centres in Mawkdok (2), Lad Sohbar (1), Laitryngew (1), Shella (2) and Sohra (3). Interested individuals are to fill in their details in Form-I of the Meghalaya Food Grains (PDS) Control Order, 2004, that are available at the SDO office (Supply), Sohra. Applications are to be submitted on or before November 20. The SDO also informed that the terms for all Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealers and SK oil dealers will expire on December 31. In this regard, all dealers are to submit their renewal applications for the year 2020 on or before November 30 along with the recommendation of the Village Durbar. Forms will be available at the SDO office. For FPS dealers who wish to renew their license, the registration copy received from the Food Safety Authority, Meghalaya must be attached along with the form which must be submitted along with the names of the members of the Village Vigilance Committee of the respective localities.

Training on cyber security & crime
TURA: In a bid to familiarise the government officials of North Garo Hills district in dealing with computer technology and various offences associated with it, a two-day training programme on Cyber Security & Cyber Crime was held at Circuit House in Resubelpara. It was jointly organised by the District Administration, NGH and Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute, Shillong. It was held on November 12 and 13 where resource persons from different departments sensitised the trainees on various aspects of cyber security and cyber crime. On day one, resource person Bawanteinam Dkhar, DIA, NIC, Social Media & Cyber Bullying spoke on Basic of Computer & Networking and Emerging Technologies. Measures to safeguard and mitigate risks was brooded by Salchirik K Sangma, SDPRO, Dadenggre, Introduction to cyber security & its principles by Ravi K Sangma, DSP and threats, risks and vulnerabilities were interpreted by P. Anjeli Marak, DDMO. On the second day, lawyer Lasteen Marak made a presentation on Legal Framework while District Superintendent of Police Sacheng Marak briefed the trainees on Case study: Cyber Crime & terrorism, Cyber Security at the workplace and safe banking.

Conrad releases book 
Shillong: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma released a book titled ‘Women and Development’ during a programme held at the office of the North East India Christian Council on Thursday. The book which is being published by the Union Christian College and the PA Sangma Foundation is dedicated to the memory of (L) PA Sangma who was the former speaker of the Lok Sabha and former chief minister of Meghalaya. In his address to the gathering, Conrad said that documenting and addressing the issues arising out of seminars and programmes is very important and that women should play a much larger role in the economy and development of the state and country. He further stated that the book will help many policy makers, researchers and students. It may be mentioned that the book is a compilation of seminar papers on women and development.

World Diabetes Day observed in city
Shillong: The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS), East Khasi Hills Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine & Rotary Club Shillong, conducted a screening-cum-awareness camp for taxi and bus drivers at the Polo Parking Lot (SRGT) in the city on Thursday as part of World Diabetes Day. Speaking at the inaugural function, RR Marak, programme officer, NPCDCS, East Khasi Hills, stressed on the importance of early detection and management of diabetes. According to the International Diabetes Federation, one in eleven adults have diabetes and more than 50 per cent of those with diabetes remain undiagnosed. This is a major concern as type 2 diabetes which is also the most prevalent form of the condition is responsible for around 90 per cent of all diabetes cases. Diabetes was responsible for four million deaths worldwide in 2017. Others who were present during the programme include Star Pala, associate professor of Community Medicine, NEIGRIHMS, David Umdor, president of the Rotary Club, Shillong, D Das, director of the Children’s Hospital, Shillong and AK Das, retd. DHS, Shillong.

Seminar on science education
SHILLONG: The North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE)-NCERT, Umiam, Barapani is organising a two-days national seminar on science education which kicked off on Thursday. The seminar was inaugurated Amarjyoti Choudhury, vice chancellor of Assam Downtown University. In his address to the gathering, Choudhury emphasised on the importance of innovative science education. Meanwhile, PLN Raju, director of NESAC, Ministry of Space, applauded NCERT for its yeoman service in promoting science education and space technology in particular through the use of remote sensing in school textbooks. He exhorted the gathering to reassess and incorporate the relevant local knowledge system so as to enable future generations to create low cost and local specific innovative machinery and devices. Earlier, B Barthakur, principal of NERIE delivered the welcome address. Others who spoke included Brajayanti Devi, associate professor and coordinator and BR Dkhar, head, DEE & Dean (Research), NERIE, Shillong.
