Guv to inaugurate exhibition
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy will inaugurate a winter travel exhibition, Travel and Tourism Bazaar, here on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Director of the bazaar, Amit Biswas, said that this year states like Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Goa and West Bengal would participate in the event. Apart from panel discussions, musical programmes would also be organised on the occasion. The event would continue till November 23 at All Saints Hall.

Seized coal up for auction in GH
SHILLONG: The Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills District has informed that seized coal at Kharkutta Police Station will be put to auction and interested parties/individuals may submit their application in plain paper by affixing court fee of Rs. 1000. The last date of receipt of application is November 22 till 3 pm and will be opened on the same date and time in presence of bidders/tenderers/their representatives. The interested persons/parties may inspect the off-loaded coal from the site at any time or Assessment Report submitted by District Transport Officer in the office of the DC during office hours before bidding and the office will not be responsible for over assessment/under assessment of seized coal at dumping site. Detailed information may be obtained from the DC’s office at Resubelpara.

AHAM reshufles members
TURA: The executive members of the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) were reshuffled in a meeting held at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills on Monday. The body elected Chakin J Marak as Assam state zone president, Jesse M Sangma as president of East Khasi Hills zone and spokesperson of AHAM CEB (Dual charge), Raksim Marak as vice president of Assam state zone, Arseng Ch Marak as AHAM CEB games and sports secretary, Sengkim T Sangma as AHAM CEB GHADC affairs secretary, Sengjrang N Marak as AHAM CEB IT secretary and Sengriksang Ch Momin as AHAM CEB forest, environment, wildlife and tourism secretary.

Seminar on banking sector crisis
SHILLONG: The Department of Economics, Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya, organised a one-day seminar on “Recent Crisis in Banking Sector in India” at its permanent campus on Tuesday. D Thomas France Rajendra Dev, General Secretary, SBI Pensioners Association, Chennai Circle was the chief guest on the occasion along with Jagdish Chandra Paul, Deputy General Secretary, Jorhat Module, SBI Officers Association, North East Circle and Bhupen Bora, Assistant General Secretary, SBI Officers Association, North East Circle. Speaking on the occasion, Thomas said that the Indian banking sector is facing crisis due to the directives of the IMF and World Bank, by which small credit has gone down and priority is given to corporate sector. Jagdish Chandra Paul said that depositors’ money should be used to save the banks, as per the directives given by the IMF and World banks. The seminar was attended by all the faculties, non-teaching staff and students of the university.

BSF celebrates Raising Day
SHILLONG: The BSF organised several programmes at various border villages under its Frontier Headquarter, Meghalaya on Tuesday as part of the force’s 55th Raising Day celebrations. Events included cultural programmes, quiz and essay competitions besides a football tournament. The 75 Bn BSF Jazz Band performed in Kilapara leaving more than 300 spectators, including village head of Kilapara and Dallu, enthralled. In the area of 97 Bn BSF, quiz and essay competition was organised at a primary school in Borsara village in which as many as 20 students and three teachers participated. Prizes were distributed to the winners. Documentary films on BSF were also shown at the community hall of Borsara. Further, a football tournament was held at Pyrdwah village under East Khasi Hills, in which teams from Muktapur, Naljuri, Dawki, Lyngkhat, Umsyiem participated.

Workshop on biofloc technology
SHILLONG: An introductory workshop on Biofloc Technology (BFT) will be organised here in the first week of December, a release issued here informed. Dinesh Bhatia, city-based NEHU Biomedical Engineering Department Associate Professor and principal investigator of BFT, said that people can adopt aquaculture now in their backyard without having a traditional pond while fish can be cultivated inside a temperature controlled green house in cold areas. Biofloc Technology (BFT) is one of the best methods for fish farming, which is innovative and cost-effective and in which toxic materials to fish and shellfish such as nitrate, nitrite & ammonia can be converted into useful products like proteinaceous feed for the fish. Thus, feed requirement in about 30 per cent lesser than normal pond fish production, the release said.

Oration, book release at MLCU 
SHILLONG: The first Thomas Jones oration was delivered at Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong on Tuesday. The oration was delivered by Prof. Andrew May, the great-great-grandson of Thomas Jones. May, in his oration, spoke broadly about the Welsh missionary, his life and work, especially about the time that he spent in India working with the people of Meghalaya and Assam. He also talked about his childhood when he came into contact with the ideals and principles of Jones that not only influenced him but also had a lasting impact on people throughout the centuries. The oration was followed by a release of Janet Hujon’s Tales of Darkness and of Light. The book is a translation and commentary of U Soso Tham’s Ki Sngi Barim u Hynniewtrep. The book was released by Sarahline Giri Tham, the great-great-grandniece of Soso Tham. The book is Hujon’s attempt to reflect Soso Tham’s stand on the meaning of being a Khasi. In it, the author honestly portrayed the social customs, religious rituals, philosophy and value system of the people as portrayed by Tham in Ki Sngi Barim u Hynniewtrep.

NE states meet to discuss infra
SHILLONG: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Research Complex for NEH Region will organise the 24th Regional Committee Meeting for Zone-III states which include Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura at Assam Administrative Staff College, Assam on November 23-24. In the meeting, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowala and other department officials will discuss the issues relating to agricultural research, education extension and training needs of the states. The ICAR has set up 8 regional committees on the basis of agro-climatic regions. Over 150 delegates from the Northeastern region including the ministers of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Fisheries departments of the concerned states would be participating in the meeting.
