Baghmara school students get soft skills training

BAGHMARA: As many as 100 students from Captain Williamson Memorial Government College, Baghmara in South Garo Hills District graduated from a Soft Skills training programme sponsored under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) Scheme and implemented by AVENUES, Shillong.
The initiative is being taken to campuses across the state with an aim to equip the region’s youth with necessary soft skills to help them improve their employability.
RUSA is a central scheme aimed at improving the quality of higher education across the country through the betterment of the educational system in the areas of infrastructure, student access and their equity through planned development at the state-level.
The scheme’s provision of equity seeks to provide support to students facing numerous obstacles along their journey towards employment, giving them a fair chance of making a living for themselves.
The graduation ceremony at Captain Williamson Memorial Government College saw the students take their first steps into the world better equipped to face interviews and work in teams with improved soft skills and confidence.
Monisha M Sangma, a 5th Semester student of Political Science said, “This kind of programme is important because it will help us become better people. We have learned so many skills from this programme such as team-building, interview skills and body language that will help us in the future and in succeeding with our dreams as well.” Monisha aspires to become a lawyer.
“I used to be afraid of speaking in public but this programme has given me the courage to speak with more confidence in front of people. I believe a programme of this kind is important because it has helped me to define my goals better and I hope that it continues to be further implemented for future generations,” said Hillstone N Sangma, who hopes to be an entrepreneur.
Speaking at the occasion, NK Shahoo, HOD, Political Science, said, “By 2020, 64 per cent of the Indian population will comprise of the youth. Technically, skilled individuals are in high demand in the country and abroad. But the best individuals who graduate from top institutions of this country have jobs already waiting for them not just because they are technically sound, but because they have soft skills as well and are experts in communication.”
Lienkotinlal Kipgen, HOD, Philosophy, addressed the audience and said that the education system has grown to encompass many elements and is now multi-polar.
“However, the system has grown to the point where education, just within four walls, is no longer enough. Our students should strive for more than just earning certificates. These soft skills interventions and skills can stay with you for life,” the HOD said.
