NEW DELHI: Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, urged the Centre to send a team to the hill state to study the land customs stations and the river routes in the region or construct a new route between India and Bangladesh through Meghalaya, on Tuesday.
Raising the matter under Rule 377 in Lok Sabha, on Tuesday, Pala said for the past few decades Meghalaya has served as a significant trade route between the two countries. But the land customs stations and the river routes remain stagnant over a period of time.
“I urge the government to take adequate measures,” he added.
Incidentally, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had recently visited Bangladesh to explore trade opportunities between the two countries.
India and Bangladesh have an annual trade of USD 10 billion, but out of this total, Meghalaya contributes only 0.7 per cent despite sharing 443 km long border with the neighbouring country.
