SHILLONG: UDP leader Bindo Lanong has said that nominated posts in councils are not like baptism cases.
In response to the statement of former KHADC CEM H S Shylla that senior persons should not accept nominated posts, Lanong said,” I would like to assert that a deacon may baptise anybody who wants baptism, but nomination to elected Houses are however guided by the Constitution and unlike what he (Shylla) said, the senior leaders should not accept nominated office, the accepted philosophy of nominations is just contrary to his opinion. He also said novices do not qualify under this scheme”.
According to Lanong, the article 80(3) of the Constitution of India specifies that those who are to be nominated, ‘shall consist of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in respect of matters, such as literature, science, art and social service’.
“For his information, neither did I apply for the nomination to KHADC nor demanded. On the basis of merits from among others, I was considered and proposed by the state government and approved by the Governor in consonance with the normal procedure”, Lanong said.
