SHILLONG: Many tourists who came to Shillong for their holidays are now stuck here for the last couple of days due to the ongoing trouble in Guwahati.
Some hoteliers stated that many tourists are stuck due to the ongoing law and order situation in Guwahati and now since it has deteriorated in Shillong, their problems has augmented further.
A hotelier said that their guests now have no other option but to remain inside their rooms till the situation returns to normalcy.
It was also informed that while some of the guests are stuck here, the flow of tourists to Shillong has gone down to zero and there are no more fresh bookings in view of the prevailing situation.
As Guwahati has been burning for the last three days, tourist taxis are no longer operating along the route.
However, a few tourist taxis on Thursday were willing to ferry some passengers till Khanapara.
A tourist driver, operating on the route, confirmed that no vehicles are plying on the route.
It was also learnt that many people were forced to cancel their flights due to the ongoing agitation in Guwahati, and now with Shillong being been put under curfew, the problem might escalate.
Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised about the supply of essential commodities to Shillong via Guwahati.
However, when contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri informed that as of now, there is no problem as far as supply of essential commodities is concerned.
Nongbri also said that the district administration is keeping a tab on the situation.
It may be mentioned that the law and order situation in North East, particularly in Guwahati, escalated after the BJP-led NDA government forced its way to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill despite stiff opposition from the Northeastern states.
