SHILLONG: The Shillong Muslim Union has lent support to the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act and demanded the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP).
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of the union sat an emergent meeting along with representatives of Muslim social organisations and Muslim institutions in Shillong held on Sunday at the office of the Union to discuss about the recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 and adopted certain resolutions.
The general secretary stated that the genuine Muslims of Meghalaya extend solidarity to the local indigenous population of Meghalaya in the democratic protest against the act and strongly condemn the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, asserting that the act is discriminatory, unconstitutional and detrimental to genuine citizens of the country.
The Union stated that the act is inherently violating basic tenets of the Constitution, particularly Article 14. The union added that the movement of people of the state against the act is autocratic in nature.
The union also lends their support in the movement of people for the introduction of Inner Line
Permit (ILP) system in Meghalaya. “The ILP must be introduced in the state without any delay for the protection of identity and demography of the state”, the press statement from the union stated.
