SHILLONG: The president of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Lambok Marngar said that the Khasi community aspires to see the inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution although the state government had passed a resolution last year.
Speaking at the 79th death anniversary of renowned Khasi poet Soso Tham, on Wednesday, Marngar said that the fate of the resolution is in the dark and urged the state government to follow up the matter with the central government.
He said that the poems of Soso Tham continue to inspire the organisation and the Khasi community as a whole, prompting them to make major contribution for the well-being and to uplift the community, especially in safeguarding the culture and tradition of the Khasis and their posterity and become pillars to build a better community.
Other leaders of the KSU and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) said that the onus is on young people to strengthen the foundations of the indigenous community. The leaders also voiced their opinions against the implementation of the amended Citizenship Act.
Marngar said that the Congress, who was opposed to the idea of implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP), has presently embraced the idea.
He said that the organisations will move ahead with democratic movement for their demand while asserting that the resolution is not yet an act.
