SHILLONG: The Lukha river, which is one of the biggest rivers in East Jaintia Hills, has turned blue again. Several years back, numerous fishes have died due to the acidic nature of the river. The water appears to be very acidic in nature and is unfit even for human consumption.
In a statement issued here, advocate Kynjaimon Amse said that while there are many cement plants in and around the Lukha river, there is no official record as to who is responsible for the pollution.
The locals do blame the cement factories for the pollution because of the grey colour deep down the river. However, there is no evidence to substantiate the claim, he said.
“While the locals have tried their best to save the river, the Government is, however, in no mood to do so”, he said.
During the dry winter season, the pollution in the river becomes visible.
However, in the rainy season, the river appears to be fine.
“It is high time that an independent inquiry be undertaken to find out the cause of pollution and fix accountability and execute the polluter pays principle against anyone responsible for the pollution,” Amse said.
