YMCA general body gets new board of directors

SHILLONG: The general body of the YMCA Shillong has elected its new board of directors for 2019-21 including Most Rev. Purely Lyngdoh as president, Frederick Roy Kharkongor as vice president, DL Warjri as secretary, AL Pariat as treasurer, Shamir Thabah as assistant secretary, DD Lapang and others. It may be noted that the YMCA Shillong is one of the many branches of the National Council of YMCAs in India.
It was started in 1974 with founding president (Late) Jusltman Swer and honorary general secretary DL Warjri along with other members like DD Lapang, G Mylliemngap, (Late) F Suchiang, (Late) SDD Nicholsroy, (Late) P Ingty, (Late) K Vincent, (Late) RL Cunville, (Late) JM Syiem, (Late) C Thomas at the Ferndale premises.
The Shillong YMCA took initiative to form other branches of YMCAs in Mizoram, Nagaland, Guwahati, Arunachal Pradesh and Jowai and Nongtalang in Meghalaya.
The objectives of the YMCA includes building strong personality, especially amongst the youth through the medium of body, mind and spirit.
The programmes of the YMCA Shillong include training in vocational courses like computer, sports initiative like basketball, karate, boxing and other capacity building workshops and seminars, career guidance and counseling programmes, religious programmes, rural outreach and care for the less privilege among others.
