NONGPOH: The local legislator of Nongpoh constituency, Mayralborn Syiem on Friday inaugurated the 3rd Youth Convention of Shillong Archdiocese Youth Movement (SACYM) Zone VI at St. Mary’s Secondary School, Nongkhrah.
Hundreds of youths from Umden, Byrnihat, Nongpoh and Umkadhor Parish of Ri Bhoi District took part in the three-day convention which aims at giving a platform to the youths to share knowledge and spread the word of God as well as to bring about a change in the society.
The inaugural function was also attended by the Parish Priest of Nongpoh, Fr. Augustine Koottala, Spiritual Director of SACYM, Fr. A Myrthong, Church elders, sisters and other prominent leaders.
Speaking at the function, Syiem said that he was grateful to be a part of the youth’s programme which will help them in moulding their day-to-day life and to become better and responsible citizens.
Syiem also urged the youths to incorporate the good things they learn in the convention and share them with their families and friends when they go back home without expecting anyone to do it for them but to take this as their responsibility in bring about a change in the society.
He also said that though there are many obstacles and challenges, they should convert the challenges as an opportunity and take things in a positive way and that they should always remember to be humble and prays to the Almighty whenever they feel down or depressed.
The MLA also spoke at length about the ill-effects of drugs and other illicit substances, child marriage and the need to preserve the environment.
Others who spoke at the inaugural function include Fr. Augustine Koottala, Parish Priest of Nongpoh and Fr. A Myrthong, Spiritual Director of SACYM Zone VI.
