SHILLONG: A day after NPP asked its members not to speak on Citizenship Amendment Act, the Opposition Congress jumped its guns on the NPP saying such diktat only proves that the party leadership including Conrad Sangma wants to be in the good books of Modi-Shah duo.
Congress leader Zenith Sangma on Saturday said that though such diktat is an internal matter of the NPP, such directive implies that people’s right to express their opinions is being suppressed as there may be many leaders in the NPP who want to express their views on CAA.
The National general secretary of the NPP, Thomas A Sangma, in an order had warned that no members of the party shall take part in any rally under the party’s banner, whether the rallies are in support or against CAA, without prior permission from the national president, Conrad Sangma.
“I know Chief Minister Conrad Sangma very well and he is scared of the people in power at the Centre who are his godfathers,” Zenith said.
“Conrad always tries to remain in the good books of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah,” Sangma said, adding that the chief minister is just following the style and functioning of what Modi and Amit Shah is doing at the Centre with their dictatorship attitude.
Commenting on the move of the state government to demand for ILP in the state, he said that there are doubts if the Union government would agree to the proposal.
“I know the mindset and mentality of Modi and Shah from the way they are ruling this country,” he said. Zenith said that he would not be surprised if the Centre would ask the state government to withdraw sixth schedule from the state before agreeing to implement ILP in Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, Richard Mrong Marak said that the ideology of supporting CAA is itself dangerous.
“Are you surprised? No. NPP was formed to fulfill the agenda of the RSS. NPP voted for CAA.
The party’s lone MP voted in support of CAB and thanked the Home Minister for the CAB. NPP is BJP. Didn’t they promise the people that they will fight against CAB? And they even said that they would break their ties if it’s passed in the Rajya Sabha. But they betrayed the people and instead voted in support of the bill. The worst kind of betrayal,” Marak said.
