SHILLONG: The state BJP will elect a new president on Wednesday in the presence of a Union minister and central leader.
There are six-seven aspirants for the post.
Among them are Cabinet minister AL Hek, legislator Sanbor Shullai and party functionaries like David Kharsati, B Khongwir, B Mawrie and JA Lyngdoh.
Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Sanjeev Kumar Balyan and BJP national secretary and in-charge of Tripura, Sunil V Deodhar, will be present during the election of the president which has been pending for long.
Sources said that Shibun Lyngdoh is not seeking re-election as the state president.
The performance of the party over the past six years in the state has been far from satisfactory as it can boast of only two MLAs.
The party in the 2013 Assembly elections had contested 13 seats, but drew a blank. In 2018, the party contested more than 40 seats but could win only two courtesy Hek and Shullai.
Similarly, the party could not fare well even in the general elections to the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats in 2019.
The BJP has of late been at the receiving end across the country and in the state for passing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
