Shillong: Bhutan defeated Meghalaya 3-0 in their U-17 girls FIFA friendly, organised by the Meghalaya Football Association in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, at the JN Stadium here on Tuesday evening.
Bhutan captain Sonam Choden scored the opener from a well-taken free-kick just outside the penalty arc, but that was the only goal of the first half as Meghalaya foiled the visitors’ other attacks. Early into the second half, however, Sonam Lhamo glanced in a corner kick to make it 2-0 and Choden finished things off with a delicious curling shot late in the game as the mercury dropped.
The Meghalaya girls gave a good account of themselves and had a few shots on target as well as some that were agonisingly close, but they could not find a way past. Sunalinda Iawren, especially, looked dangerous and she was well-supported by Fragrancy Riwan, Darisha Kharlyngdoh and Wandashisha Marwein. The match was watched by Sports & Youth Affairs Director Wanri Booth, who was the chief guest during the event, and a good number of friends and family who cheered on the team. This was the first such friendly football match held in Shillong.
The second and final match between the two sides will be held on January 23 at the JN Stadium at 2:00pm.
