SHILLONG: The Chairman of CoMSO, Robertjune Kharjarin has asserted that Meghalaya was safe and the agitations for ILP would not affect the people who come here to for tourism and lawful purpose.

Denying that the recent violence has brought bad name to Meghalaya, Kharjarin said that their agitations must remain non-violent even as added that the scale of violence during the anti-CAA protest was much more in other  parts of the country including New Delhi and UP where police assaulted people like dogs.

“ Even  in UP, police go even to the residence of the people and thrash them which is not happening here in Meghalaya,” he said , adding that the university agitations in New Delhi does not stop him from going to Delhi

According to Kharjarin, the recent agitations for ILP has not brought any bad name to Meghalaya as people in the state has been fighting for ILP since ages.

“Even in 2013, the scale of violence which happened here is incomparable and I don’t think that protest have brought a bad name to Meghalaya,” he said

Making it clear that they don’t agitate to harm others but to protect the indigenous community as they are only demanding a law which would protect indigenous population of the state, he added the in the last one month after the resolution on ILP was passed, agitations have calm down though it is taking place.

“ Lot of peaceful demonstrations and meetings are still taking place and I don’t think that the people coming into the state should think otherwise,” he added.

It may be mentioned that city had witnessed violence during the anti CAA and pro ILP protest just before the Christmas and several vehicles were torched in the city.

There were cases of ransacking of shops and people were also assaulted in the city during the protest.
