Wah Mawlein: Known as the cleanest village, Mawlynnong, is all set to face a stiff competition from Wah Mawlein, which is the cleanest village in Mawkynrew block.
During a programme held at Wah Mawlein on Friday titled Tawiar shad na pongshai ka Mawkynrew, speakers spoke about the cleanliness aspect of the village.
Speaking to reporters later, Block Development Officer (BDO) LT Tariang, when asked if the village will be another Mawlynnong, confidently said that Wah Mawlein is better than Mawlynnong, adding that the latter is still regarded as the cleanest village.
Other than the cleanliness aspect, he said that Wah Mawlein has a favourable literacy rate and people have no opposition towards immunisation.
Tariang informed there are projects of not less than 10, which will soon be launched in Shillong.
As the Block gets ready to welcome tourists’ inflow, Tariang said that the Block office is also preparing the residents to receive tourists.
Speaking about the programme, he said, “We organised the Tawiar shad na pongshai ka Mawkynrew so that people can have a positive outlook and seek God’s blessings, to appreciate life and their neighbours”, adding that there is a need for unity amongst the villages in Mawkynrew.
To bring about the much-needed unity in the villages, Tariang said the Mawkynrew Village Employment Council (VEC) was formed, which is currently an ad hoc body, adding that he is the ad hoc chairman, whilst the secretary is a VEC member and there are members from every village.
Tariang also said that villages would often bicker over village boundaries. In this connection, the programme was organised with an aim to keep aside differences and work together for the welfare of Mawkynrew block as a whole.
He applauded the two villages, viz. Umblai VEC and Mawlat VEC, who combined together to present a memento to the Dorbar Khynnah (Children’s council), Wah Mawlein.
Tariang informed that Mawkynrew VEC was started last year not only for availing schemes but to bring about a societal responsibility.
He added that with the involvement of vendors (who supply raw materials to the VEC), he said that it is almost like a CSR project.
“We decided to come up with an awards programme as nothing of this has ever come up here. Firstly, it is to identify talents and secondly to recognise the commendable works that they have done in the respective fields, be it in sports or social service. In recognising their service, others can also get inspired,” he said.
He particularly stressed on teachings that have misled the people and said that residents in the Block, certain people take advantage and come out with false teachings, prompting people to resign from their jobs while there are some that do not want to take medicines also.
Stating that the Mawkynrew VEC was formed to take up the task of creating awareness and to move people away from any obscure teachings, he said, “And for this task, all the villages are to be united”.
Speaking at the programme, local MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh said that he wants to bring development in the constituency and encouraged the residents to have a change of mindset.
