Assam Rifles jawan arrested with Yaba tablets in Manipur
Imphal: An Assam Rifles jawan has been arrested for allegedly possessing and transporting Rs 2.3-crore worth ‘World is Yours’ tablets, a powerful stimulant drug popularly known as ‘Yaba’, in Manipur’s Thoubal district, police said on Friday. During a regular vehicle checking on the Imphal-Moreh highway, police commandos stopped the car of Yengkhom Bikram Singh, a jawan of the 6th Assam Rifles, at Wangjing Bazaar at around 8.30 pm on Thursday, a police officer said. “While searching his vehicle, the commandos found 2.3 lakh Yaba tablets concealed in an airbag of the car. The seized drug is worth Rs 2.3 crore in the international market,” the officer said. The jawan was recently transferred from Arunachal Pradesh to his home state Manipur, he added. (PTI)


Nagaland Assembly gets Speaker
Kohima: First-time MLA Sharingain Longkumer of the ruling NDPP was elected on Friday as the speaker of the Nagaland Assembly. Longkumer, an MLA from the Aonglenden seat in Mokokchung district, defeated former speaker Imtiwapang Aier of the Naga People’s Front (NPF). The election was necessitated due to the death of Speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu on December 30. Altogether 57 legislators, including 32 of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance of which NDPP is a part, participated in the election. The BJP and an Independent MLA supported Longkumer along with other ruling coalition legislators, while 25 NPF MLAs voted for Aier. Two seats of the House are currently vacant. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Leader of the Opposition T R Zeliang felicitated Longkumer for being elected as the speaker. (PTI)


Numaligarh Refinery acquires land
Guwahati: The Numaligarh Refinery Ltd said on Friday that it has acquired 200 acres of land from the Paradip Port Trust on long-term lease to set up an oil terminal. The terminal will be set up as part of a mega expansion project of the refinery, the company said in a statement. The terminal will enable NRL to import crude oil at Paradip Port to meet its requirement post the expansion. The company said it has paid Rs 20 crore to the Paradip Port Trust as initial deposit for the land. The NRL is expanding its capacity from existing 3 MMTPA to 9 MMTPA at an investment of Rs 22,594 crore. It includes a 1,398-km crude oil pipeline of 9 MMTPA from Paradip to Numaligarh and a 654-km product pipeline of 6 MMTPA from Numaligarh to Siliguri. (PTI)


Khandu for improved law & order
Itanagar: Stressing on the need for innovative policing tactics specific to diverse communities of Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday said that improved law and order will pave the way for development in the state. Khandu, addressing police officers at an event here, said law and order challenges vary from each district and tribe and the force must act accordingly. “The sentiments, ethos and sensitivities of the people are different which call for inclusive and innovative tactics in policing. I advise you all to take community leaders into confidence in all matters related to law and order,” he said. Khandu said that the pace of development will accelerate only in a peaceful environment, adding that with the encounter of the person accused of murdering senior police officer Bomto Kamdak, arrests of drug peddlers and militants and seizures of a large number of stolen vehicles, the force has gained the trust of the people. Khandu assured budgetary support to strengthen the police and asked the officers to prioritise proposals that can be implemented in the next five years. (PTI)
