SHILLONG: The Director General of Police (DGP), R Chandranathan, on Wednesday, launched a crime scene unit and an expert panel during the concluding day of the two-day Superintendents of Police – Commandants (SPs-Cos) conference which was held in Police Headquarters.
The crime scene unit will help greatly enhance investigations ensued by investigating officers, who will be assisted by a team of experts.
The unit consists of K9s, fingerprint experts, crime scene photographers, FSL scientists, and two officers from CID. The unit will also be assisted by two district officers.
The expert panel for crime against women and children will monitor POCSO cases, CAW, and domestic violence cases in the entire state.
The panel will also ensure that the provisions of the law are complied by the various agencies and will cooperate in liaison with several departments to make certain that cognizable offences are promptly registered and investigated into. The panel consists of officials from the FSL, Law, Medical, Social Welfare, and Police departments. The panel will also assist investigating officers in such cases.
The conference was initiated by R Chandranathan, Director General of Police and attended by officers of the police department.
The SPs of the 11 districts and the commandants of the 7 battalions delivered presentations about their respective units, accentuating on various keynotes such as administrative, law and order, fleet management and crime.
Special emphasis was also made on cases relating to crime against women and children and POCSO cases.
The second day of the conference was also attended by Meena Kharkorngor, Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, who spoke about crime against children and the trauma faced by such children post the incident.
