SHILLONG: San Shnong Youth Welfare Organisation has written to the executive engineer (EE), National Highway PWD, requesting him to lay rumble strips on Shillong-Nongstoin road between starting point of Pomlum village and ending point of Lad Mawreng village besides reconstruction of footpaths from Pomlum village to Raid Sadew-Laitjem.
The general secretary of the organisation, Lionel Nongkhlaw, said that laying of rumble strips, wherever needed, is to reduce the speed of vehicles at crossing points in these areas so as to prevent accidents as the road is mostly used by school students and pedestrians who reside along the side of the road.
Nongkhlaw was informed by the EE that for reconstruction of footpaths, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) from Delhi has approved the proposal and they have to submit the DPR to get the sanction and he assured the organisation that within this year, he will restore the footpaths for the safety of school children.
Moreover, the EE said that as per the norms of NHAI, there is no provision for laying of rumble strips in national highways but he will consider this petition and will seek the approval from the chief engineer to lay the same, wherever needed.
The EE suggested the organisation to Approach National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) for construction of footpaths and laying of rumble strips in Pomlum Higher Secodary School, Pomlum PHC.
The organisation met an official of NHIDCL to include the same in their designs since they are in the process of designing the road project.
