GUWAHATI:  With a constructive step to address the environmental issues under its green campus initiative, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), on Wednesday launched two green energy carts for use of students and staff within its campus. The carts were flagged off from the Amenity Centre of the university by senior journalist, Prasant Rajguru in presence of Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor; Prof Suhail Sabir, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr PK Goswami, Principal Advisor and Dr RK Sharma, Advisor of USTM.

Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said, “We have taken many constructive steps to address the environmental issues inside our campus and the neighbourhood. The battery operated carts are one of such measures. The international scientific community has been nearly unanimous in telling us that reliance on carbon-based fossil fuels is causing global warming and climate change. Our campuses should not be contributing to this ecological time bomb called global warming. Being an institution of higher education, we have a special responsibility to address the continuing environmental crisis.”

He stated that more such carts will be operating in the campus, especially for convenience of the physically challenged students of the “I Can I Will Academy” of the university.
