Allegations of extortion at Assam airport

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya People’s Labour Union (MPLU) has alleged criminal extortion by middlemen (dalal) and criticised the assault of a tourist taxi driver after a refusal to pay money to the dalal at LGB International Airport, Borjhar, Assam.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, president of the union, Erwin Sutnga shot off a letter to the Cabinet Minister of Assam Himantas Biswa Sarma and filed a complaint with the Director General of Police, Government of Assam against the alleged criminal acts by the dalals at LGB International Airport, Borjhar, Assam and the assault of Maitshaphrang Marwein.
Sutnga said that driver of the tourist taxi (ML 05 M 9660) was assaulted by dalals after Marwein refused to pay the amount of Rs 600 on February 22 to them.
Sutnga alleged of extortion and illegal activities taking place at LGB International Airport, Borjhar.
He went on to add that the extortion is done only from Meghalaya tourist taxis.
Meanwhile, president of the Hynniewtrep Tourist Taxi Association (HTTA) Kordor L Mawlong said that they are extorting Rs 600- Rs 1500 from each Meghalaya tourist vehicle.
