MAWKYRWAT: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), South West Khasi Hills district, on Monday advised the district administration to setup village level markets in order to maintain social distancing.
Assistant General Secretary of the KSU, Michael Dingan in statement said, “We have seen that it was so difficult to maintain social distancing in big market areas especially in Mawkyrwat. The district administration along with the volunteers is trying very hard to implement the advisories issued by the government, but it is not easy as densely packed crowd come to the markets.”
The reason behind the overcrowding is shortage of essential commodities in their villages.
“This may bring danger to the people of our areas and therefore we urged the government to take the initiative to ensure that essential commodities reach each and every village so that people will maintain social distancing,” Dingan said.
The KSU also requested the government to provide Mobile van bank/ATM so that people will have easy access to cash.
The KSU has asked the District Administration to not take extreme measures against those who are found without car pass because according to the union,
people are struggling for essential commodities in this time of crisis and they are desperate. Dingan said the government should release the financial assistance of Rs 1000 per week and also the assistance for MGNREGS job card holders as promised by the government. The KSU also urged the public to stay at home.
