Meghalaya showcases unity in fight against COVID-19

SHILLONG: Amid panic and fear of COVID-19, a different side of Meghalaya has been uncovered as people from different religions, communities and walks of life have come together to combat coronavirus.
Though no positive case has been reported in the state, different frontline workers are working overtime to ensure that the spread of the virus is stopped at the earliest.
Many are full of appreciation for frontline workers including health experts, doctors, police personnel, headmen and local NGOs and individuals who are coming forward to serve the people in times of crisis.
Almost all the hospitals in the state are taking precautions and preparing for any emergency.
Apart from doctors, the state police also have an extra job of maintaining social distancing and to ensure that people do not come out in the open violating the COVID-19 norms.
In addition, Meghalaya police and anti infiltration department are screening trucks which enter the state carrying essential commodities.
The NCC cadets are also seen actively taking part in assisting civil administration in enforcing social distancing and discipline in Shillong.
A total of 4 officers, 9 ANOs, 11 PI staff and 80 cadets of NCC group Shillong assisted the police in monitoring proper physical distancing during ration distribution in the government approved shops on Monday based on requisition by SP, East Khasi Hills.
PPE were provided to all cadets by the police and ten teams of 8 cadets with one ANO& one PI staff were deployed all across city to assist the police and administration.
This exercise is likely to go on for another two days and more than 200 senior division cadets of over 18 years of age have volunteered for this cause from Meghalaya, all of whom will be deployed in phases.
Meanwhile, Ex Service men (ESM) of Meghalaya Rajya Saink Board have also join hands with state administration in fight against COVID-19 as 16 veterans  of Indian Army, led by Col Gautam Rai ( Retd) , Director , Rajya Saink Borad of Meghalaya volunteered to assist and help the administration in fight against coronavirus.
It is expected that another 20 ex-servicemen will join this initiative soon.
In addition, many individuals, religious groups, and civil societies are also coming forward to provide a helping hand to the poor people by way of providing them food and ration during this time of crisis.
