EJH body concerned over Assam vehicles plying
SHILLONG: The East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) – central executive council, has expressed concern over free movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities in the district in view of the rising cases of COVID-19 in Assam. In a statement issued here, the EJNC said that the free movement of vehicles from other districts poses a risk to the people of the district. Seeking DC’s intervention into the issues, the EJNC has asked the DC to have permanent vehicles kept in the district and to hold proper medical screenings of driver and occupants.

Forest wildfire in Sohlap
SHILLONG: A forest wildfire destroyed some plantations in Sohlap on Monday, which was later put out by the fire department. Moreover, there were other reports of wildfires in other parts of Shella bordering Meghalaya and Bangladesh. Vice president of Hill Farmer’s Union (HFU), Prince Starwell Sarubai, said that the fire has affected places, especially along the international border.
In the fire, areca nut plantation, orange orchards, banana trees, lychee trees, betel leaves, etc. were destroyed, leaving a huge loss to the farmers.

Fire engulfs Tura municipal dump
TURA: A massive fire broke out inside the garbage dumping ground of the Tura Municipal Board at Aglanggre, outskirts of Tura, on Tuesday evening with fire tenders racing against time to contain the blaze as it threatened to spread. The blaze was so intense that the smoke spread all the way towards the main areas of the town and the police had to bring in additional fire tenders from Rongram, 28 km from Tura, and even Ampati in South West Garo Hills district. “We have pressed into service 6 fire tenders and have been able to contain 80 per cent of the fire. We are still at the site,” informed district SP MGR Kumar. Locals from the area complained that the fire had been burning for last couple of days and became intense on Tuesday. The police chief said that had early information been passed on, timely action could have been taken.

Khliehriat: East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued various helpline numbers for the citizens of the district in view of coronavirus pandemic. According to a statement, the DC Control Room can be contacted at 7628079707 and 7628078735 while the Control Room for Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme can be contacted at 03655230605 and 6009693315. The District Task Force numbers include 8974948714, 6002854495, 7005198199, 986219434, etc, while the Police Control Room can be contacted at 7005286235. For registration of marginal section of the society deprived of daily wage, the daily wage earners have been advised to contact 1070 or WhatsApp number 6009924512.

500 masks to WJH Police
JOWAI: Four individuals from Shillong including Gerry Kyrshan N Nongrum, Ralph Lyngdoh  Mawphlang , Daphisha Gabriela Pyngrope, CA Ram Kyndiah visited Jowai Sadar Police Station on Tuesday and donated 500 home-made masks to the West Jaintia Hills (WJH) District Executive Force (DEF). Meanwhile, the WJH DEF — under the leadership of DSP Infiltration/DSB, Sahana Mukherjee — donated vegetables to the jail authorities for the jail inmates. The isolation wards in the districts were also visited by police to review the security arrangements.

Ban on loudspeakers in WJH
JOWAI: West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued an order requesting the public to adhere to advisory against broadcasting or use of any PA and audio system in the localities and villages in the district by any faith-based or any other organisation, group or people so as not to cause any discomfort or disturbance to the public amid the situation arising out of COVID-19.

Poor families in EJH get essentials
JOWAI: A woman, Chiarmon Dkhar, resident of Wapungskur village in East Jaintia Hills, has distributed essential commodities such as rice, potato and salt to 58 poor families at Snahlein locality of the village. The families earn their living from hand to mouth and as such the lockdown in view of COVID-19 has had a huge impact on their livelihoods. Similarly, three persons — Rihaka Dkhar, Leinipyniodame Dkhar and Yeslangki Dkhar of Wapungshnong — contributed essential commodities to poor families in their village amidst the lockdown.

Rice distribution in SWKH villages
Mawkyrwat: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar on Tuesday distributed rice to the locals of Riwar area under Mawkyrwat Constituency, South West Khasi Hills, sanctioned through the MLA scheme of Rs 25 lakh. The MLA along with the BDO of Mawkyrwat Block FB Basan, Ex-MDC of Langrin Constituency Manstudy Nongrem, among others, visited different villages in Riwar area including Mawrap, Photjaud War and Phlangkynshi and distributed 25 kgs of rice to each household.
