AHAM seeks welfare of Garos stranded in Assam

SHILLONG: The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), in a letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, asked him to make arrangements with regard to the welfare of the Garo community including students stranded in the neighbouring state.
In the letter, AHAM informed Sonowal that the Garo populace in Assam, who are mostly daily labourers, small businessmen and shopkeepers, are facing economic hardships due to the prevailing situation arising out of COVID-19.
Despite steps being taken by the Assam Government to address the situation, there are many needy persons, particularly from Garo community, who have not received any help and support from your end, the letter said.
“Therefore, we request you (Assam Government) to reach out to those people, particularly the Garos, who are still in need of your help and provide them with essential commodities such as rice, dal, vegetables, etc.
Further, the AHAM informed that around 60-70 Garo students who were undergoing professional course in Assam have been stranded due to the nationwide lockdown. While some have been asked to vacate their rented houses as they have could not pay their dues, others have been in distress owing to lack of proper shelter and food crisis.
While maintaining that in these trying times, every citizen deserves to be taken care of, the AHAM appealed to the Assam chief minister to take cognizance of the matter and tend to the plight of the students who are stranded in the state.
