GUWAHATI: Two persons from Morigaon district have tested positive for COVID-19 taking the cumulative number of cases in Assam to 34, state health and family welfare minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma informed on Thursday evening.
“They are secondary contacts of Nizamuddin Markaz attendees,” Sarma posted on his official Twitter handle.
The development comes in the wake of the recovery and discharge of five COVID-19 positive patients – two from Sonapur Civil Hospital on Wednesday evening, and three from Goalpara Civil Hospital on Thursday morning.
The health minister had earlier in the day visited Goalpara Civil Hospital to take stock of the health condition of the three patients from the border district before their discharge.
The patients, Khabiruddin Ahmed, Shahjahan Ali Ahmed and Yusuf Ali, who is just 18 years of age, would now be under observation for 14 days in accordance with the protocols laid down by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
“The three patients from Goalpara district have tested negative in two successive tests, their chest X-rays are normal and doctors have also certified their recovery. So they have been fully cured and would be under 14 days’ observation as a precaution,” Sarma told reporters present at Goalpara Civil Hospital on Thursday.
With the report of two more testing positive for coronavirus on Thursday, number of active cases in Assam currently stands at 28.
“Tomorrow, about 10 more patients undergoing treatment in Golaghat and Guwahati are likely to be discharged. So, we are expecting that about 80 per cent of the virus-infected patients in the state would recover by April 20,” Sarma said.
