SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asked the government to help those in self-quarantine.
The central executive council, in a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, said, “We are concerned as to how these people or families who have been asked to self-quarantine for a period of 28 days will survive.”
The organisation asked how they would fend for themselves if they are not allowed to come out of their houses to buy essential commodities. Stating that although the state government has allowed work under MGNREGS, agricultural activities etc to be exempted from the lockdown from April 20, the people under self-quarantine will not be able to go to work for specific period.
“How will they support themselves and their families,” the organisation asked.
The government should provide a one-time assistance of Rs 5000 per family as done for the stranded residents to ease their hardship.
Again, the organisation said that the government should initiate steps to ensure that these families are not deprived of their basic necessities during the period of quarantine.
Volunteers should be appointed in each village/locality, where persons are under self-quarantine, to ensure that essential commodities are delivered to their homes without delivery charges, so that they are encouraged to follow the strict quarantine procedures.
