GUWAHATI: The Assam government has resolved to work out a time-bound plan in accordance with suggestions provided by senior economists to tackle the situation arising out of the COVID-19 induced lockdown and help revive the state’s economy in the coming days. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with Cabinet ministers on Tuesday had a detailed meeting with 29 economists of the state who offered various suggestions in regard to boosting sectors such as agriculture, industry, banking, marketing, manufacturing, et al. Addressing reporters after the meeting here, Sonowal said the state government would be seriously considering the measures suggested by the economists in order to boost Assam’s economy and make the self sufficient in production. “The economists have suggested that various activities in priority sectors can be resumed by adhering to all norms in the wake of COVID-19. Already, we have resumed operations in agriculture and tea sectors while standalone shops in green belts too have reopened from today,” the chief minister said. Sonowal said the experts have recommended a phase-wise approach to revive the economy with the cooperation of the people. “They have suggested that a task force can be constituted at the block level, while youths, farmers, weavers can be absorbed in dedicated sectors such as agriculture, horticulture and pisciculture in accordance with measures initiated by the task force,” he said. The chief minister further said that more focus would be on priority sectors which require investment. “We have the resources to tackle the situation in the coming days. These have to be utilised judiciously,” he said. Sonowal thanked the senior economists for suggesting their valuable ideas in the review meeting held to take up certain austerity measures to help put economic growth in the state back on track. |
