TURA: As a precautionary measure to safeguard the district after mysterious deaths of pigs in certain parts of the neighbouring Assam and Arunachal Pradesh were reported, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has, under Section 144 Cr.PC, prohibited transportation of pigs from other states into the district with immediate effect and until further orders. As per the District Magistrate’s order all government and private pig farms and pig farmers should take adequate measures for strict hygiene and bio-security such as disinfection of the farms, equipments, etc and restrict entry of any outside persons into pig farms. Earlier on Tuesday, an emergency meeting of the District AH & Veterinary Officer, South West Garo Hills with all the AH & Veterinary officers of the district was held at Ampati to discuss precautionary and preventive measures to contain the outbreak of suspected African Swine Fever in the district. Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have also been constituted to prevent and control the outbreak of the disease in the district and have been activated with immediate effect. It was decided in the meeting to spread awareness in the among the villagers, to advise the villagers to consume pork only after proper cooking (above 70 degree Celsius) for at least 20 minutes and in case of high fever in pigs and abnormal mortality of pigs, the matter should be brought to the notice of the District AH & Veterinary Officer/Block AH & Vety officers.

Segregation of sick animals, burial method of animal carcasses in case of mortality and strict observation of quarantine in case of introduction of new stock, were also discussed during the meeting.
