NONGSTOIN: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) said that the two-laning of the road — which was earlier supposed to start from from Mawrusyiar — will start from New Nongstoin to Chhaygaon – Kyrshai as per the demand of the Nongstoin legislator, Macmillan Byrsat.
The MLA had strongly opposed the construction of the road with the starting point as Mawrusyiar.
He had demanded that the road should start from New Nongstoin stating that it will ease traffic congestion in the town as the present road is narrow and cannot cope with the surge in vehicular movement.
The legislator, in a letter to PWD Minister Prestone Tynsong, said that the road project, Nongstoin – Rambrai – Kyrshai under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North Eastern region (SARDP-NE), will serve as a lifeline to the people of West Khasi Hills, especially Nongstoin as it will connect the state with Assam.
He informed the minister that another road project, Nongstoin – Wahkaji also under SARDP-NE, which starts from Nongstoin town, is supposed to connect to Nongstoin – Rambrai – Kyrshai road at Nongstoin.
However, he said, it is discerned that the road Nongstoin – Rambrai – Kyrshai will not start from Nongstoin town but a chainage that is more than 5 km away from the town, which will create a missing link between Nongstoin – Rambrai – Kyrshai road and Nongstoin – Wahkaji road.
The MLA, therefore, requested the minister to ensure with the authorities that the road should start from Nongstoin instead of Mawrusyiar. The PWD Minister then initiated the matter with the secretary of PWD to communicate with the NHIDCL to not change the alignment from the original proposed starting point.
The NHIDCL considered the appeal and directed that the road will start from Nongstoin town.
