SHILLONG: Low-key celebrations marked Eid-ul-Fitr in Shillong on Monday as the faithful had to confine prayers indoors since mosques are closed due to the ongoing lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Closed gates of mosques, deserted streets and quiet Eid Gahs were the scene in the state as the world grapples with COVID-19 pandemic and festivity goes for a toss.
One of the popular glass mosques, Madina Masjid in Laban too was under locks. Its lawn which would otherwise be filled with Muslim faithful offering prayers lied empty.
Similar was the scene elsewhere in Meghalaya, but nonetheless people greeted each other over phone and treated themselves with rich savour at their own homes.
Some prominent citizens of the community while congratulating all for praying during the entire month of Ramadan from the confinement of their homes keeping in mind the protocols set by the government said that the community has also contributed in the fight against COVID-19 by praying from home.
