NONGPOH: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has urged the returnees to quarantine for a complete 40 days as per the meaning of the term.
Speaking during the inaugural programme of the Community Quarantine Centre at Nongpoh on Monday, he explained that the term ‘quarantine’ comes from ‘quarantina,’ which means forty in Italian and, as per the term, people must be quarantined for 40 days to contain the spread of the virus. He also said that the rise of positive cases in the neighbouring state of Assam is because of the fact that they encourage people for home quarantine post the mandatory 14-day quarantine at a government centre, while adding that these should be corrected in Ri Bhoi district and the state so as to contain COVID-19 from spreading.
“I would personally encourage all the community quarantine centres in the state being set up at the village level to quarantine those returnees for another 26 days after being released from the 14-day quarantine at the government quarantine centre,” Syiem said.
Meanwhile, Syiem also lauded the dedication and relentless efforts of the headmen, the Nokmas and all the village leaders in the state for supporting the government in the fight against the pandemic by forming the Community COVID-19 Management Committee.
During the day, Syiem also handed over masks to the headmen of Nongpoh Proper for distribution to the frontline workers of the village who are involved in volunteering and looking after the Community Quarantine Centre of the village.
Earlier, Syiem also inaugurated the Community Quarantine Centre of Nongpoh Proper at Nepali Secondary School having a total of 12 rooms, which include seven for males and five for females.
