GUWAHATI: The Mizoram government has announced total lockdown in the state for two weeks with effect from Monday midnight, a decision taken on a day when several states lifted certain restrictions to get “Unlock 1.0” going.
The tough call apparently was taken in view of the increasing coronavirus cases in the state of late. The state currently has 41 active COVID-19 cases.
One patient, who was the first in the state to test COVID-19 positive, with a travel history to the Netherlands, recovered on May 9.
Earlier in the day, chief minister Zoramthanga had a consultative meeting on COVID-19 with members of legislatures, government officials, church leaders, members of village and local councils, taskforces and NGOs to discuss the state’s way forward.
“Total lockdown for two weeks starting midnight tonight! Quarantine period 21 days. Home quarantine option will be limited to extreme unavoidable cases,” the chief minister posted on his official Twitter handle on Monday afternoon.
He further informed that the lockdown guidelines would be notified shortly.
Meanwhile, the state reported eight fresh COVID-19 positive cases, all of them asymptomatic and returnees from Delhi.
“Out of 244 samples, eight new cases (three male, five female) were confirmed at the Zoram Medical College lab last night. Five are from Champhai district, two from Khawzawl district and one from Siaha district, between ages 21-30. All are returnees from Delhi, under quarantine and showing no symptoms,” an official report informed on Monday.
