MAWKYRWAT: The Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo, on Tuesday, condemned the assault on the NHIDCL engineer, Sujit Kumar Singh, on Sunday at Mawkyrwat, by unidentified miscreants and called upon the village headmen, communities and all sections of the society to be united in opposing such acts and be vigilant against anti-social elements.
In an appeal to the citizens on Tuesday, the DC said that the unprovoked assault on the engineer has tarnished the image of the district and disturbed many right-thinking citizens.
Therefore, the office of the deputy commissioner unequivocally condemns such acts of meaningless violence, the DC added.
Calling for unity in these trying times, the DC requested the public to treat all individuals with kindness and compassion.
Laloo asserted that the district is strictly adhering to protocols related to entry of high-skilled workers in the district.
She said that her office had, earlier this month, written to the NHIDCL with a request that in view of the lockdown and departure of many interstate migrant labourers from the worksite, wherever possible, they will employ and provide training to locals from within the district or state in order to provide gainful employment to unemployed youth.
It may be mentioned that the engineer is overseeing the road construction project from Ranikor-Maheshkhola-Baghmara and had completed all formalities as per government orders when on his way to his workplace at Nongjri.
An engineer of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) was injured and the vehicle damaged after miscreants attacked him at Tynrong here on Sunday evening.
The group of miscreants had stopped the vehicle (Bolero) of the engineer and beat him up black and blue.
