SHILLONG: A day after the HSSLC examination resumed in the state, the Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to allow the students from the North East, who have missed out on the examinations owing to the indefinite lockdown, to reappear for the papers.
It may be mentioned that many students and workers had left for their respective states in the wake of the hiatus in the education and labour sector.
“Many students come here from Northeastern states to pursue their academic study. Majority of them are from poor families and live in private rented houses as well as hostels. Now, amid this COVID-19 lockdown, most of the private businesses are affected badly and all the institutions are closed. Under such unavoidable circumstances, many students and families have left to their native places,” the students’ body said in a letter to the chief minister.
“As per MBoSE, remaining examinations of class 12 were rescheduled for June 8, 9 and 10 respectively. Unfortunately, many students from other Northeastern states are now in their native places and could not reach to appear for the examinations due to the prevailing law and order situation.
As their academic year will be in a loss, hence, request you to look for any possibility for such students from other states and allow them to appear for their examinations again,” the letter added.
It may be mentioned that albeit the state government has given the nod for inter-district travel, the interstate travel still remains suspended.
Moreover, the students’ union alleged that some schools, householders, and private hostels in the city have asked students to pay rent and fee in full.
“Some house owners have even asked to vacate the occupied rooms if one fails to pay the rent,” the letter said.
