MAWKYRWAT: In a bid to prevent outsiders from entering the state, especially amid the COVID-19 situation, the Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District has set up a check point at Umngi River bordering East Khasi Hills.
Interestingly, during the hours of checking at the check point, the KSU apprehended four outsiders — one from West Bengal and three from Assam – who came from Shillong and wished to enter South West Khasi Hills. However, the union sent them back. Two of them were employees of Jio.
The union had, however, stopped the checking at the check point after the district administration along with the police told them to not conduct checking after 5 pm.
Regardless, the union remained firm about continuing to keep checking in different parts of South West Khasi Hills and Mawsynram Block under East Khasi Hills.
Speaking to media persons, president of the KSU South West Khasi Hills District, Forwardman Nongrem, said that outsiders have been freely entering the state on the pretext of being “highly-skilled labourers” even as he said that the measures taken by the district administration in checking the entry of people is disappointing.
Lamenting no response from the legislators in this matter, Nongrem said that the union will write to the MLAs asking them to take up the issue with the state government.
