OIL incurs heavy losses because of gas  well blowout and fire

GUWAHATI: Public Sector Oil India Limited (OIL) has incurred a cumulative production loss of  6132 MT of crude oil, 7.97 MMSCM of natural gas till June 16  since May 27 because of agitation programmes by various organisations against Baghjan gas well blowout and subsequent fire in the gas well in Baghjan oil field.

Meanwhile, as part of environment impact assessment initiatives in and around Baghjan gas well fire site, the OIL has facilitated regular monitoring of  air and water quality, noise level  as well as presence of Gas (lower explosive limit) .

Environment Impact Assessment study is in progress by M/s ERM India Pvt. Limited, a NABET accredited consultant, to carry out the environment & ecological survey within the vicinity of  Baghjan Gas Well No.5 including Dibru-Saikhowa National Park  and Maguri–Motapung Beel, according to an OIL communiqué.

Preliminary assessment by TERI team is in progress at site carrying out bioremediation of sludge in OIL’s installations using a technology developed in-house by R&D Department of OIL.

Study using seismological technique on tremor report from the neighboring areas is being conducted by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – North East Institute of Science & Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat facilitated by Assam government. Arrangements are being made for seismologists to come to site with requisite equipment.

Preliminary assessment on vegetation impact survey on plants and tea garden was conducted by Assam Agricultural University. They have been further requested to start post fire damage assessment study to assess the damage to the crops/tree/plants (paddy/tea/fruit/vegetation) in surrounding area of Baghjan.

As part of preparation for capping the well on fire nine  trucks loaded with materials for Bailey Bridge mobilized from 3 Corps Indian Army, Misamari, Tezpur is in transit. Two more trucks are being loaded and six more trucks will be loaded today with remaining materials for the bridge and shall depart for Baghjan.

Vehicles carrying second load of Equipment/Materials mobilized from ONGC–Rajamundry is in transit. The other two vehicles carrying equipment/materials mobilized from ONGC- Vadodara is also in transit
